Bone augmentation is a term that is used to describe a variety of procedures. These procedures typically involve grafting (adding) bone. Bone augmentation is sometimes necessary to replace bony defects resulting from trauma, pathology or surgery.

There are four types of bone grafting material used in the oral cavity (mouth): autogenous bone- bone taken from other parts of your body, allografts- mineralized or demineralized freeze dried human donor bone, xenograft- purified anorganic bone (bovine), and alloplastic- man made synthetic material. The bone material comes in different particle sizes and cortical fibers. These materials can be resorbable or non-resorbable. Dr. Holcomb will discuss the most appropriate graft material for you.

The choice of bone graft material is based on many factors. One factor is the selection of the prosthetic replacement. When an extraction site receives a graft, ridge preservation is enhanced and gives the patient a chance to restore functionality and esthetic appearance. You may choose to have a dental implant (similar to a bone screw) or a fixed bridge. A fixed bridge is a restoration that is supported by the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth/teeth. In some cases, if the bone is deficient, there may be an unsightly space along the margins of the crowns. Other replacement alternatives include removable partial or full denture. These often perform better with more bone support provided by bone augmentation.

Adequate time for healing is necessary for the graft to mature. The healing time varies depending on circumstances. The time required depends on the patient’s age, healing capacity, residual infection in the graft site, and the size of the defect.

The bone augmentation procedure is performed in the office under IV anesthesia. The procedure is usually minimally uncomfortable. Depending on how involved it is determines how lengthy the surgery will be. Dr. Holcomb will review this with you at the time of your consultation.
